5 Tips for Job Search Success
It’s always difficult to know what to do and what not to do when searching for a new job/career. Here are a few things you can do to make a good impression and feel confident when you’re looking for a new job.
Remember Your Online Presence
How you act online can have a large impact on what a potential employer will think of you. Almost every hiring manager will run a quick web search on you when you apply for a job to verify that you are who you say you are. Any inappropriate, crass, or questionable posts on social media sites can damage your chances of getting a job. Taking a look at your online presence through the lens of an employer will help you decide what is and isn’t appropriate to post online. Remember that everything you post online is there permanently, and any inappropriate content could cause you issues in the future. Also, make sure that you have a professional-sounding email address, as that is often the first contact an employer has with you.
Talk Positively About Previous Employers
If you have worked previously (either paid or voluntary), you’ll most likely be asked about your previous experience in job interviews. Even if you had a negative experience at your last position, focus on the positive aspects. Employers want to hire someone with a positive attitude, and the way you discuss your previous employer will help them determine how you will interact with management and other employees.
Dress and Act Professionally
Finding a stable job usually means you’re entering a professional world where you’re expected to dress and act accordingly. Make sure to match what you wear at an interview to the environment of the company where you are interviewing. If you’re not sure what dress is appropriate, feel free to ask at the time your interview is scheduled, or use some of the suggestions in the “Researching a Company” article. A good general rule is to be dressed a little nicer than the normal dress code of the company. If you are interviewing in a professional environment, this includes suits for men and conservative business attire for women. During the interview, don’t tell your whole life story to the interviewer; keep your answers focused and succinct.
Stay Optimistic
A job hunt can take quite some time. Although the process can be discouraging, it’s important to stay positive. If you’re feeling down about how long it’s taking to find a new job, your depressed attitude can carry over into job interviews and hurt your job search. If you do everything you can to remain positive and upbeat, it will impact your success in interviews and networking opportunities, and it will increase your focus during your job search.
Diversify Your Search
There isn’t just one guaranteed way to find a job. Explore every avenue possible in order to learn about employment opportunities. Look on social media, online job boards, and, most importantly, reach out to people as much as possible in order to make contacts and find job openings that may not be listed online. Don’t be scared to expand your search parameters—you may find you’re qualified for jobs you didn’t even realize existed!
